NOCTURNAL

Here we have our potoo at night – his favourite time of the day. Two gigantic headlights project out towards nothing, surrounded by darkness. And these gigantic things have their benefits, as –like a screen– the larger they are, the more light receptors they have and the greater the image created on the retina. This means that no prey can avoid being detected, and no movement escapes his exceptional sight. When the moon passes its zenith, the bird cries out with a mysterious song that shakes all sleeping fauna: his night-time kingdom is fading, and it will soon be time to close his eyes.
