GLOBUS

Thanks to our friend Ingrid Naumann’s scanning microscope, we were able to appreciate the complexity of this beetle whose shell – covered with a very thin layer of gold – we have immortalised here in the form of an earring. Although it is estimated that some 60,000 species exist in the Mariana Trench, this specimen is particularly special, as it belongs to the Globus: a family of half a micron in height and of aristocratic origins, obsessed with playing cricket, which led them to travel to the depths of the ocean in search of new games on board their inseparable King Charles, a peculiar globe propelled by nematopods. It is either through the use of this means of transport or because of its golden shell, or both at once, that it is known amongst the marine fauna simply by the nickname of Pijus.
