To enhance the effect of their plumage, the Lavish Birds of Paradise manipulate the colours of their environment: creating their own sunny locations, pruning tree branches and clearing the ground. Their feathers are some of the darkest found in all of nature, as dark as some of the artificial materials used in high-precision instruments.
