While all species at Svalbard are vital, in some cases their disappearance would be critical. For example, the Bambara groundnut, which was developed in West Africa as a drought-tolerant crop as it effortlessly withstands high temperatures, low rainfall and most of the known fungi, often making it the only protein source in soils where other legumes fail to survive. It has a hugely diverse use in the kitchen, ranging from a savoury snack or even a light dish in Burkina Faso to a breakfast pudding in Nigeria and an array of cakes in Chad.
