MANET’S BOW

The bow around Olympia’s neck is her only adornment. Its minimal presence manifests the tension of the painting: the contrast between the immutable whiteness of the body and that dark line that delimits its power. The viewer’s gaze is directed towards it and, from there, ascends to the face holding the gesture. Serene, inscrutable, haughty, aware of the power it contains.
