And, in the case of the Birds of Panama, just milliseconds: the females, with a clinical eye for courtship dances, are capable of detecting even the most subtle differences in displays. For example, here we have two males competing against each other: one has just completed five double tour in 2.31 seconds and the other in 2.32 … The result? The fastest one has won the prize and the other … We’ve turned the other into a Maxi earring, so at least those who come after us will –hopefully– recognise the effort…
