It all begins on the bank of a river on a sunny day. Alice, a seven-year-old girl, is bored listening to her sister read a book with no illustrations or dialogue. Suddenly, she sees a white rabbit walk by, muttering, "I'm going to be late!", pull a watch from his waistcoat, and run into a rabbit hole. Daring, she follows the same path, and thus begins a wild adventure of potions that shrink or enlarge, playing cards that come to life, talking gardens, and pipe-smoking caterpillars that will transcend the limits of our imagination.
Welcome to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865), Lewis Carroll's classic in which known laws don't apply and everything has its own particular logic. An impossible universe where time stops, objects disappear, and causes and effects are inverted. Where words lack fixed meaning, leading to absurd dialogues, misunderstandings, and unsolvable puzzles. A dreamlike territory with as many symbols as it has unusual characters: duchesses living among pepper, queens obsessed with beheading, grumpy ducks, and dodo circles. "You can't help but walk among madmen," admits the ever-grinning Cheshire Cat: "we're all mad here." Or has anyone ever played croquet with flamingos as mallets and hedgehogs as balls?
Conceived during a mysterious boat trip down the Thames, the work has inspired silent and sound films, cartoons and manga, musicals and ballets, and reinterpretations by Balthus and Dalí, Joyce and Nabokov. And, from now on, this dazzling collection of accessories in which we leave no playing card unmarked, no teacup unserved, no large egg unbroken, and no Mock Turtle soup unslopped. And we do so using a pastel color palette—and not the Mad Hatter's pastries!—based on colorimetry principles to enhance different skin tones and combined with sober and elegant smoked mirrors on organic shapes, whose calculated movement responds to a prior study of facial morphology to flatter the features, neck, and hair. And in which we include, for the first time, a selection of matte materials finished with the usual gold-plated fittings, as well as metal pieces that serve as support for multifunctional earrings to which pieces can be added or removed, in a renewed nod to the playful spirit that permeates Carroll's overflowing fantasy.
Because it's that brazen and festive energy, irreverent and a bit anarchic, that we aspire to transfer to the new pieces. With its subversive and boisterous humor, its critique of inherited behaviors and dogmatism, its rejection of the cosmic order as we contemplate it. An attitude with which we intimately identify, which is in the foundational pillars of papiroga.
We've all dreamed at some point of being Alice. We've all fantasized about the idea of changing size, talking to a hurried rabbit, and celebrating our un-birthday. We've all wanted to help some playing cards paint white roses red and stand up to a despotic queen. And wished for the clock to stop at exactly six o'clock to plunge us into eternity.
A collection designed for the nonconformists has arrived. For those who refuse to be trapped in adulthood and wish to regain a sense of wonder about the world. For those who continue to seek new horizons, unknown landscapes to travel to with their childlike spirit, always reluctant to go to bed so they can keep on daydreaming.
