PELONISIDE

The colour of this delicate marine invertebrate varies depending on what it has last consumed. In this case, star-shaped algae extracted from the bottom of the Mariana Trench. The peloniside’s twisted surface, here transformed into a Maxi earring, was revealed thanks to the use of the latest generation of laser microscope, which allowed us to enlarge in high definition this being of barely half a micron in height. Witnessing it in its natural state is not easy, however, as it only appears on summer nights in small colonies on the surface waters of Micronesia, taking advantage of the sea change, and as soon as a camera detects its presence, it disappears once more into the ocean.
