With a network of three hundred kilometres, more than three hundred stations and a century of life under its belt, the metro for Madrid is much more than a means of transport: it’s a way of travelling through its history and witnessing the growth of the city. Opened when the capital still had less than seven hundred thousand inhabitants, it has been extended over the years and has survived innumerable avatars to become one of the most important in the whole world, with six hundred and twenty-seven million rides being taken every year.
