He didn’t sign his paintings till very late: most of the paintings he made in Europe were signed by a simple X. But, far from being confined to a signature, the X was part of the painting as a sometimes principal element. Because Xul made his signature a graphic resource, using it to represent the outline of a man extending his arms to the sky, as two matches multiplying his brain energy.
