If we had to place the duration of seeds on a timeline, lettuce would be on the short end, lasting just seventy-five years if nothing changes. At the opposite end of the spectrum is sorghum, which barely needs any care and can last up to nineteen thousand years! So, where does the pea sit on this imaginary timeline? “This one here?”, points the Svalbard biologist, “two thousand years”. “Two thousand?”, we reply in disbelief. “But that’s an eternity!” And that idea, of a piece designed for life, is what inspires this earring. Don’t they say that a jewel is also forever?
