Rogelia slowly searches the swamps of South Africa. Her prehistoric figure gives her away: she is a shoebill. She spends hours observing her surroundings, with her unmistakable beak glued to her chest. If something edible comes within range, she reaches forward with her neck to capture it. Then, she straightens up – and with a few quick movements gobbles it up as her gaze returns to the same fixed point. When she gets tired, she takes a nap. On those days when she awakens with enough energy, she takes flight in one quick leap and bats her wings heavily until she finds the perfect current that allows her to glide effortlessly. And when the current falls, she rests with her beak close to her chest for what feels like forever.
