Devadasi

The enigmatic figure of the devadasi -Temple’s sacred dancers- enchanted over the centuries to the travellers arriving in India from all over the world. Consecrated to dance since they were a child, they told through their bodies their country’s history with sensual movements that captivated not only men but also gods. Mysterious, inaccessible, vaporous, their legend hasn’t stopped growing till being considerate a national treasure nowadays. When the Portuguese sailors discovered them, they baptized them as bailadeiras, from where the word bayadère results.
