Before developing her abstract language, Hilma dedicated years to observing Nature, determined to understand the structures, rhythms, and relationships underlying its visible forms. A perspective she compiled into 46 sheets of botanical studies, from which we selected the Iris pseudacorus that inspires this earring.
However, we do not reproduce the plant literally, but only its essential features, such as its verticality, the opening of its petals, and that intriguing contrast between brightness and color. The result gives light to a new reference, recognizably botanical but non-figurative, which captures the idea, so present in the artist's work, of simplifying Nature to transform it into her own language.
Two distinct gestures are combined. On one hand, the long green leaves, narrow, vertical, and pointed, and on the other, the yellow flower, softer, curved, and open, thus creating a tension between direction and expansion, leaf and petal, which plays with geometry through its organic forms.
You will find it in Nature Studies, 1919-1920.
